Ontario mills and recyclers ship a lot of paper to India, and the box never needs to see a truck to the coast. It gates in at a Toronto-area rail ramp, rides CP or CN to Montreal, and sails from there.
How the lane runs
- Gate-in at CP Vaughan or CN Brampton. Both ramps are a short dray from anywhere in the GTA, Hamilton or Kitchener-Waterloo.
- Rail to the Port of Montreal. The carrier's own rail product, so one booking and one bill of lading cover the whole move.
- Sail Montreal to Mundra. A direct service to the Indian west coast with one of the major carriers we book with.
- Rail on to an inland depot if needed. Much of our Ontario cargo is bound for northern India, and the container goes through Mundra to an ICD such as Sonipat on the same bill of lading.
Transit time
From our own bookings: about seven weeks from Montreal departure to Mundra and about eight weeks to Sonipat ICD. Montreal's winter schedule can stretch that by a week or two, and we'll tell you when it does.
FAS or EXW
Under FAS you deliver the loaded container to the Vaughan or Brampton ramp. Under EXW we send the truck to your dock anywhere in southern Ontario or Québec, pull the empty, load, and gate in. We run EXW pickups across Ontario every week.
Weight and equipment
40′ high-cubes almost without exception. Ontario road weight rules are generous compared with most US states, but the rail and the Indian road leg are not, so we plan the load around the destination limits, not just the pickup.
Documents
Commercial invoice and packing list, the Canadian export declaration (CERS), and the bill of lading or sea waybill we issue as the NVOCC. Recovered paper needs the consignee's Indian import registrations in place before loading; we check that at booking. Certificates of origin on request.
